Ronaldo has scored 36 goals so far this season and this week answered the critics who have accused him of going missing in the big games by opening the scoring against Roma in the UEFA Champions League.
But while England winger Downing admits he cannot name a better player in world football, he says Boro have nothing to fear when United head to the Riverside Stadium on Sunday.
'He has set a new level...He is that good...Last season, Ronaldo was probably the best player in the Premier League. This year, no one even gets close...If he doesn't win world player of the year, I'd love to know who is better.' "
